What do the Iranian Ayatollahs Really Want

International disputes over resources and territories have often deteriorated into military

offensives based on the assumption that use of power could be the fastest way to realize an

imperialistic aspiration. Not only that such upsetting approach nowadays jeopardizes the

world order, it also destroys civilized relations and contradicts the self-esteem of humans as

top of creation with cognitive abilities and moral rules that differentiate them from wild

beasts. The use of military force and unbearable invasion to neighboring countries implies

that even now at the 21st century, ancient aggressive urges (originally developed for survival

in the animal kingdom) still prevail as a driving force in human societies. Among numerous

examples of leaders who prefer violence and use of military power to achieve their aims are

the Iranian Ayatollahs, who exploited the revolution and removal of the Shah from chair to

establish a religious tyrannical regime protected by a number of security layers, particularly

that of the ‘Revolutionary Guards’. Notably, despite the natural treasures of Iran, especially oil,

their leadership during the modern era (e.g., Khomeini, Rafsanjani, Hamminai) failed in

developing the economy and life standards to a comparable level as in the Western world. The

main reason was the corruption and religious obsession (including women oppression) that

often typify Muslim regimes, as well as enormous waste on military adventures and colonial

aspirations. As soon as they were elected by the Iranian people with a hope for a better,

decent ruling system, the Ayatollahs have quickly established a theocratic regime governing

with an ‘iron fist’ of the army and police. To secure their positions and gain loyalty, they

improved the living conditions of their surrounding defenders, while neglecting the rest of the

population. Years of ruling probably have raised the Ayatollahs’ self-esteem and Ego up to

embellished aspirations of leading the Muslim Jihad as well as becoming the strongest

regional power. While such objectives require economic and cultural leadership, their

exaggerated religious control and instigated terror created an opposite effect that could as

well be their big mistake leading to collapse, due both to ‘explosion’ of over-pressurized

Iranian population and military retaliation of surrounding nations suffering from the Iranian

aggression. In fact, the highest probability for expulsion of the Ayatollahs from power might

follow a war against Israel and the US over the issue of developing nuclear weapons. Right

now, the Ayatollahs seem to have gained confidence in their militaristic approach based on

their success in controlling the large Iranian population, as well as the weak responses of the

West toward their aggression. They ignore the fact that the world has changed, and so

aspirations to return to the days of the Persian Empire are illusive. Iran has no territorial nor

economic conflicts with Israel, and so an arising question is what is the basis of the Ayatollahs’

hatred to the USA and Israel? Without joint borders, economic competition, or historic

loathing, why do they want to destroy the state of Israel (re-established after the holocaust by

the United Nations vote in 1947). The answer does not seem complicated: A corrupted

religious regime like that of the Ayatollahs requires a scapegoat to distract the public

attention from their own faults and difficulties. Such naïve strategy has often been adopted by

corrupted leaders in the Muslim world, toward an imaginary enemy, in order to lift the

pressure and complains of the citizens. By inciting the masses against Israel and

disseminating fake declarations about destruction of the Al Aksa mosque in Jerusalem (quite

ridiculous claims), as well as a purported support in the Palestinian claims for ownership of

the land of Israel (another attempt to rewrite the history), they have succeeded to divert the

hatred of the masses from themselves toward the Israeli state. Amazingly, this primitive

strategy is successful in Iran and rather than seeking international relationship for economic

flourishing, they have chosen the way of terror and war. Noteworthy, the Muslim belief in Al

Aqsa as one of the sacred sites of Islam is based on the preposterous fairytale of Mohammad

arriving from Mecca on his winged horse prior to his death and journey to heaven. The actual

reason for its build-up was to demolish the holiest site of Judaism (where the temple was built

and renovated by King Herod). Similar strategy was used by the Christians who arrived to the

New World, where they built churches on top of ancient pyramids in Central and South

America in a systematic attempt to destroy any residual symbol of previous religions. In fact,

and opposite to the Muslim claims, Israel guards the rights of the Christians, Muslims, and

Jews in Jerusalem quite successfully, and thus the Ayatollahs’ religious claims against Israel

have no real basis. Still, as ‘non-stop heating may pour water even from a rock’, the massive

continuous propaganda about the destruction of holy Islamic sites by Israel, seems to

convince the gullible masses in the entire Arabic world1.

So, what do the Ayatollahs really want? A rational answer should also consider their religious

status, old age, and desire to maintain their leadership. No doubt, they want to live in comfort,

feel safe, receive good economic and medical treatment, nourish their Ego with total

obedience of the Iranian citizens, oppress women to minimize their sexual appeal (Taliban- like approach)2, and above all, prevent any attempt of revolution that may end up similarly to

the hanging of Saddam Hussein in Iraq, torture of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, or even

imprisonment of Mohamed Morsi in Egypt. Finally, such a regime involved in international

acts of terror, no matter whether based on bogus claims or religious fabrications should

better be eradicated as it jeopardizes the entire world and cannot remain untouched,

particularly when the future of mankind and our planet are in danger3.
