ABSTRACT

The intention of the present paper is to propose an original connection

between semiotics and biophotonics, the unconventional discipline

considered as the study of the “ultraweak delayed bioluminescence”

emitted by all the living systems (Popp, 1989). The synergy of

semiotics and biophotonics − able to assume scientifically the language

of the “living light” − is representing the strategy already named by

authors Semio-Bio-Photonics (SBPh: Stănciulescu, Nilaya, 2017). In

order to define it, the paper is briefly describing and justifying the

SBPh scenario of the consciousness and implicitly of (verbal) language

genesis. So, the purpose of the present synthesis is to finally recognize

that a SBPh integrative approach is indeed possible and necessary for

understanding who the real homo significans and homo loquens is.

Keywords: semiotics, biophotonics, “living light” signs, consciousness and

language genesis, emergent organon.

INTRODUCTION: ON SEMIOTIC LANGUAGE OF THE “LIVING LIGHT”

It is already a truism to say that semiotics − the general science of signs and the methodology of

operating with them − is explanatorily involved in the mental genesis of sign codes and the rules

of their use. Such aspects were postulated − on the ancient branch of the philosophy of language,

through the Stoics, Plato and Augustine and others − and by modern representatives of semiotics,

such as Peirce, Saussure, Morris, Eco, Sebeok and others, equally engaging in the contributions of

bio-neuro-logic, philosophy of language, psycho-linguistics, etc.

But, the understanding of the ontogenesis of the signs with which semiotics operates cannot be

achieved without the contribution of a newly emerged science: biophotonics, the theory and

methodology (organon) of the “living light” signs1. In our unconventional terms2 − biophotonics is

1 We are using the syntagm of the "living light" not as a metaphor, but for naming − as did professor Fritz-Albert Popp

(1989), the father of biophotonics − the bioluminescent emission of light (aura) delivered by all the living systems as

fluxes of (bio)photons existent at the level of biological substratum. 2 The technological definition of biophotonics (medicine + technology of lasers) describes it as “the science of

generating and harnessing light (photons) to image, detect and manipulate biological materials”

studying the emission, stocking and delivering of biophotons by all the biological systems, in their

quality of bio-lasers − assumed as “Biological Lasers” Theory, namely (Stănciulescu, Manu, 2015-

2002), determining by the mechanism of the “holographic resonance” the human homeostasis and

wellbeing − assumed as Biophotonic Theory of Energy and Information namely (Constantinescu,

Stănciulescu, 1993; 2019).

These two theories are able to rationally explain the meaning of the “language of the living light”,

namely:

(a) the structure and functionality of human "biological lasers" systems, represented by some

cells, organs and by the whole organism;

(b) the nature of bio-electromagnetic interactions of the human organism with the social and

cosmic systems of (bio-psycho)light.

Rationally understanding these complementary aspects of birth and maturation of human

consciousness required the configuration of a unique approach − semio-bio-photonics [SBPh]

(Stănciulescu, Nilaya, 2017; 2020) −, able to transdisciplinarily correlate human sciences (biology

and neurology), technology of lasers, those of human significance (philosophy and psycho- linguistics) through the mediation of the phrase “light-sign”.

Highlighting the structural and functional premises that allowed the generation of the word-sign

as one of the main measure of human consciousness is a major aspect of this chapter, thus

emphasizing the symbolic unity between (living) nature and culture, which SBPh assumes it

implicitly.

PRINCIPLES OF THE “LIVING LIGHT”: THE ROOTS OF A SEMIO-BIO-PHOTONIC APPROACH

The knowledge of the "living light" has just recently become factual theory and practice, starting

with the research of Dr. Fritz-Albert Popp, initiated in Germany after 1980. As we have already

mentioned, by using high level technology (photon-counter), the German researcher has shown in

laboratory the presence of an ultraweak delayed bioluminescence (Popp, 1989) emissions of

biophotons at the level of all the biological tissues (vegetal, animal, human).

This observation has confronted the new science − biophotonics namely − with two

epistemological impasses:

(a) the impossibility to explain the mechanisms through which biophotons reach the nuclear

DNA in order to consequently be released through seemingly spontaneous emissions type;

(b) the exceptional nature of these emissions, which − according to the lab evidences −

exhibited all the attributes of the “biological laser” light.

Trying to solve these impasses, the scientific team coordinated by Dr. Traian D. Stănciulescu at the

National Inventics Institute of Iasi, Romania, succeed to prove the analogy existing among the

structural and functional attributes of a technical laser system and the ones of the (human)

biological systems, such as cells or organs.

(https://www.springer.com/gp/book/9780387249957). But, in the terms of our own approach, biophotonics

concerns the quality of biological / living systems to manifest laser properties.

Further, we will summary present these main analogies3, in order to connect them with the

essential (semiotic) functions of human consciousness. In this frame, we will briefly interpret the

meanings of the “biological lasers” which human organism presents and which are implied into

the genesis of the “living light” language.

Each of the above associated figures − explainable into the semiotic terms of SBPh (Stănciulescu,

Nilaya 2020) − is presenting some essential attributes of a certain type of “biological laser” system

(Stănciulescu, Manu, 2002), justifying in this way the analogy between a technical laser and a

“biological laser” one.

Consequently, by doubling the bio-technological lab evidences concerning the ultraweak delayed

(biolaser) bioluminescence with their rational explanations (the main structural and functional

attributes of each type of “biological laser”), we will be able to finally say, in accord with Karl

Popper’s “logic of discovery” (2002): “Yes, this model could be indeed functional... It is plausible

because is logic and it is explaining so many ignored aspects...”.

So, let’s start analyze these analogies from the perspective of SBPh, hoping that in this way we will

offer some original data and suggestion able to enrich the premises of the endosemiotics

(Wamberg, 2013) and implicitly of the anthroposemiotics / communicology (Lanigan, 2007).

The (bio)laser Active Substance

(Figure 1) is representing the first main attribute of a technical laser, able to determine

biophysical phenomena such as the quantum “inversion of population”, the coherence,

polarization, directionality etc. We discover that at the level of living system this “active

substance” is represented by the molecular complex phosphate → linked water → molecular oxygen

→ stimulating light, a structural attribute common to the whole biosphere4. The chemical and

spatial distribution of the molecular complex described in the figure (fig. 1b,c), − is able to

determine some ignored quantum processes (fig. 1a), involving the quantum role of the π

metastable electron of the phosphate. According to nonlinear optics, this mechanism is

transforming the incident incoherent / visible light to become an invisible laser type light, delayed

and coherent, deviated towards a non-pathogen UV, cf. anti-Stokes rule).

3 Extensively, all these aspects were presented in different other scientific contexts, in the period of 1993-2020. In the actual

frame, in order to limit the dimensions of the text, we will explain in more details the definitions of the technical and

scientific terms / photos used, considering them already known or making adequate bibliographical references. So, we

demand excuses to the readers who will need a dictionary to obtain some more detailed clarifications about our assertions.

Symbolically, we are discovering the meaning of the four cosmogonic elements: earth, water, air and fire, suggesting in

this context too that “human is the measure of everything”, as Protagoras postulated.
