The study examined the relationship between human resource expenditure and productivity of Universities in Nigeria. It aimed at finding out the influence of human resource expenditure on the productivity of Universities. Secondary data were used for the study and the study covered a period of ten years from 2002 to 2011. The multiple regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses. The dependent variable in the regression model is productivity of universities, while the independent variables are salaries and wages, and training and development cost. An investigation was undertaken into the possible relationship between productivity (PO) and the two components of human resource expenditure: salaries and wages (SW), and training and development cost (TDC). The study shows that there exists a positive correlation between human resource expenditure and productivity of universities. The study recommended that the management of universities in Nigeria adopt staff welfare and incentive schemes to motivate their workforce to improve productivity in the university system.
